Higger Tor Peak District
High on the dark moors above Hathersage, in an area of the Peak District National Park known ominously as the Dark Peak (a reference to the colour of its gritstone rock rather than its sinister character), you’ll find a weird and wildly ragged collection of rocks known as Higger Tor.
They come in all shapes and sizes, with wonky crags to scramble across, slippery ledges to tiptoe along, and plenty of claustrophobic gullies and gaps to squeeze through. Higger Tor is a popular hangout for local rock climbers, and we’d suggest leaving the polished walls to them because they’re just high enough that you’d damage more than your pride by toppling off.
More than anything, this is a great place to go walking, and by Peak District standards it’s relatively low on crowds too. You can reach Higger Tor’s 434m high point on foot from the nearby village of Hathersage (great for pubs and gear shops) and from Grindleford Station in Upper Padley.
But if you just want to get up there quickly, park in one of the bays on the small road that passes just a few hundred metres to the north. While you’re there, make sure you visit the prehistoric fortress of Carl Wark that’s clearly visible across Burbage Moor to the south perched high on an another impressive gritstone outcrop.
